(Terry Troy Cleveland Plain Dealer) Sports car fans got their first look at the new 2012 Corvette lineup at the National Corvette Museum and Corvette production facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky earlier this month.

In addition to elevating Corvette’s performance capabilities both on the track and on the road, Chevy is making additional enhancements to its high-performance Z06 and ZR1 Corvettes. The company also used the event to showcase a brand-new racing-inspired Chevrolet Centennial Edition of the iconic sports car. Production begins in July.
“Corvette is the only car that is going to acknowledge the Chevrolet Centennial with a special edition,” said Rick “Corvette” Conti, new car sales manager at Ganley Chevrolet of Aurora. “It’s an all carbon flash metallic edition, and it’s available on the Coupe, Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1.”
pd-4.jpgCorvette really exists as its own brand within Chevrolet. As such, the Ganley Automotive Group recruited Conti just over a year ago to develop and build Ganley Chevy’s Corvette Center. He’s one of the leading Corvette experts in the country.
If you’re a Corvette fan, you’ll really like what Chevy has done for 2012.

“We constantly strive to make the Corvette a better car on the road and on the track,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette vehicle line director and chief engineer. “For 2012, the Corvette lineup achieves its highest performance level ever. It’s easier to drive and enjoy thanks to several changes and new features inside of the car.”
pd-6.jpgCorvette’s greater performance for 2012 begins with the new, optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires. They are available on the two highest-performing models, the lightweight, 505-horsepower Z06 and the maximum-performance, 638-horsepower supercharged ZR1. They are competition-oriented tires and are optimized for warm, dry conditions to increase cornering and handling capability.

The Cup ZP tires were developed by the same Michelin engineers who develop tires for Corvette Racing in the American Le Mans Series. They are essentially street-legal versions of a racing tire. They are included in the optional Z07 performance package on the Corvette Z06 and a new PDE performance package on the ZR1.
pd-5.jpgPerformance Traction Management is offered on the Z06 for the first time in 2012. It is an advanced system that integrates traction control, active handling and selective ride control systems to enhance race-track driving consistency and overall performance.

A full-width racing-style spoiler improves aerodynamics and is included with the 2012 Z07 and PDE packages.
The Z06 model will now have Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology that Corvette pioneered several years ago. Brembo carbon ceramic brakes will be a part of the Z07 chassis package and are standard on ZR1. Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires remain standard on the ZR1.

A carbon fiber hood will be available on the 2012 Z06 models. The standard manual transmission for ZR1 will include taller gearing in fifth and sixth gears for a two-mile per gallon improvement in highway fuel economy.

All 2012 Corvette models will include a new seat design and a new steering wheel.
pd-3.jpg“The seats are much more comfortable and support you while you’re on the road or track,” Conti said. “They have widened the bottom and added a couple of wings to better support your shoulders. And they have done all of this on what is essentially the same seat frame.”

The new seats are complemented by the revised steering wheel, which features model-specific badges, streamlined switch trim and wrapped spokes. A padded center console and armrests are now included on all models for 2012. An additional visual touch inside of the car is the contrasting color stitching in red, blue and yellow, which is available with the custom leather-wrapped interior.

“The Chevrolet Corvette is a vehicle that says you have arrived,” said Conti. “One of the reasons I specialize in these vehicles is the gleam I see in the eyes of every new owner when they pick up their vehicle.”

When the Ganley Automotive Group called Rick “Corvette” Conti over a year-and-a-half ago, the goal was to have him join the dealership to help turn the Corvette Center into one of the premier Corvette dealerships in the state.

After a little convincing, Conti joined Ganley’s Aurora operations in April 2010. And while he serves as new car sales manager for the dealership, Conti has also been able to build the Corvette Center into the largest Corvette dealership in the state.

When it comes to selling the iconic sports car, “Corvette” Conti certainly is the right man for the job. He spent over 17 years as an exclusive national Corvette representative and was the top Corvette sales person in the country. Conti is uniquely in touch with the Corvette community.

“Eventually we plan to keep 30 to 50 Corvettes in stock,” said Conti. “That’s more than all of the other Corvette dealers in the area combined. You can’t sell off an empty shelf.

pd-8.jpg“People who are focused on Corvettes expect you to have and know about the cars. So that’s why I personally handle all Corvette customers. I also do all of the ordering, so I know exactly what we have in stock. Our pricing is crystal clear, and we don’t play games. That’s really what’s made us grow so fast.”
Right now, Corvette production stands at about 12,000 vehicles a year. That’s down significantly from 2007 when production was about 44,000 vehicles annually.

“So we are still in an era of depressed production,” said Conti. “But the good news is that we are starting to see a turn around.

“I love these vehicles, and I have loved selling them since I started more than 17 years ago,” Conti added. “I like to say that I have been delivering dreams since 1995.”

Chevrolet recently announced that it was investing $131 million at its Bowling Green, Kentucky Corvette production facility, creating more than 250 jobs. Chevy also recently announced that it will invest more than $2 billion in U.S. assembly and component parts, creating or preserving more than 4,000 jobs at 17 facilities in eight states, including Ohio.
Thank-you Terry for acknowledging us, there is a lot we talked about I know did not hit the paper, but we appreciate your sharing in our enthusiasm for Corvette!
